The CW is down 27% this year in its target demographic, adults aged 18 to 34.

Its fall shows were well received but have barely treaded water in the Nielsens. Most worrisome: The return of the network’s reliable reality performers “America’s Next Top Model” (down 29%) and “Beauty and the Geek” (off 54%) dropped sharply this spring. The numbers suggest that the CW needs more than just quality shows to jump-start its stalled momentum.

The CW has revealed the identities of the nine boys and nine ladies competing on Beauty and the Geek’s fifth season — however unlike previous seasons, this season’s “social experiment” will begin with the two cliques competing against other, not paired into the show’s usual opposite-extreme couples.

Given the show’s title remains Beauty and the Geek, the “beauties vs. geeks” twist presumably isn’t permanent, however The CW isn’t saying. “[Viewers will] have to watch and find out,” a network spokesperson told Reality TV World. The network also had no immediate explanation for how a season-long re-creation of a division easily seen at schools across America would fit with the show’s oft-mentioned “social experiment” maxim.

As a result of the twist, Beauty and the Geek’s fifth season won’t begin with the contestants being eliminated in pairs. Instead, the team that loses a “beauties vs. geeks” elimination competition will have to select five members to participate in a revamped elimination quiz and whichever participant fares the worst will be eliminated. Like the show’s earlier seasons, the cast will be competing for a $250,000 grand prize.

Beauty and the Geek’s fifth season, which will once again be hosted by Mike Richards, will premiere on Tuesday, March 11 at 8PM ET/PT.

The nine “geeks” are:

- Chris, a 23-year-old MIT oceanography student from Cambridge, MA

- Greg, a gay 23-year-old clothing designer/pastry chef from Azusa, CA

- Jonathan, a 26-year-old system administrator/technical consultant from Colfax, CA

- Jim, a 21-year-old computer programmer/student from Bedford, MA

- Joe, a 24-year-old TV assignment editor from Nipomo, CA

- John E., a 25-year-old CW-billed “recovering Microsoft addict” from Tempe, AZ

- Jason, a 23-year-old Internet marketer from Brooklyn, NY

- Matt, a 21-year-old student/writer from Little Elm, TX who currently resides in Dallas, TX

- Tommy, a 24-year-old law student from Somerville, MA

The nine “beauties” are:

- Amanda, a 23-year-old model from West Warwick, RI who currently resides in Queen Creek, AZ

- Amber, a 25-year-old model from Houston, TX who currently resides in Los Angeles, CA

- Cara, a 21-year-old cocktail waitress and aspiring soap star from Leawood, KS who currently resides in Temecula, CA

- Jillian, a 22-year-old model from Northfield, NH who currently resides in Miami, FL

- Kristina, a 21-year-old student from Wheaton, IL

David Olsen and Jasmine Moore were revealed to be Beauty and the Geek’s fourth-season winners during last night’s finale broadcast of The CW reality series.

“It feels good. It feels damn good!” David exclaimed when host Mike Richards asked how he felt after the victory.

David, a 28-year fire department administrator from Somerville, MA, and Jasmine, a 22-year-old nanny from Columbus, OH, claimed the show’s $250,000 grand prize based on home viewer votes cast following last Tuesday night’s penultimate episode broadcast. It was the first time in Beauty and the Geek’s history that home viewer votes determined the show’s winner.

David and Jasmine defeated Sam Horrigan and Nicole Morgan to take home the Beauty and the Geek 4 title. Sam and Nicole represented Beauty and the Geek’s big fourth-season twist — for the first time in the show’s history, a “hunky guy” and “nerdy girl” competed as a team.

Last night’s finale also served as a Beauty and the Geek 4 reunion show that reunited the 10 fourth-season couples for the first time since the show’s filming concluded four months ago. It also reunited Sam with Rebecca Nichols, with whom he enjoyed a romantic relationship with before she was eliminated.

“I definitely missed Rebecca the second she walked out the door, and I’ve missed her ever since” said Sam. He and Rebecca then embraced and shared a kiss.

Tony, a 26-year-old medical student from Fort Smith, AR and his partner Amanda, a 25-year-old model from Warren, OH, became the first couple eliminated from Beauty and the Geek’s fourth season during last night’s broadcast of The CW reality show.

Heading into the elimination round, Tony said he was “doing this for Amanda.” He and John would have to answer questions about hip-hop, while Amanda and Natalie would answer questions about politics and current events. Amanda failed to answer either of her questions correctly but Natalie did recognize the preamble to the United States Constitution. When John knew 50 Cent had been shot nine times he sealed the victory for himself and Natalie, sending Amanda and Tony packing.

“I kind of wanted to prove there was more to me than just what I look like,” said Amanda following her elimination. “I learned that a lot of people view me as a smart person… I think maybe I need to not second guess myself as much and not doubt myself and trust myself more.”

“I will definitely remember Amanda,” said Tony. “She helped me get out of my shell and just believe in myself. I really do feel like I did grow… it really is hard for me to open up like that.”

Beauty and the Geek 4’s next episode will air Tuesday, October 2 at 8PM ET/PT on The CW.
